Sports Illustrated called the 1992 Men’s Olympic Basketball Team “arguably the most dominant squad ever assembled in any sport.” The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame went a step further, proclaiming them the greatest basketball team ever assembled. For the majority of fans, they simply were known as the “Dream Team.” From that glorious gathering comes this white t-shirt that is signed in black felt tip around the red, white, and blue “USA Basketball” 1992 Olympic Basketball Team logo by 11 of the 12 NBA superstars who claimed Olympic gold. Signers are Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson, David Robinson, John Stockton, Chris Mullen, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, and Christian Laettner. It is also signed by assistant coach Lenny Wilkens. The item is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from JSA.
The 1992 squad was the first American Olympic team to feature active NBA players, thanks to a 1989 rule change that had allowed only amateur players to play on the men's Olympic basketball team. Not surprisingly, the Dream Team dominated the Olympic Games. In the gold medal contest versus Croatia, Team USA defeated their opponent 117-85.
Following the Olympics, Barkley reacted to the competition by saying, “I don't think there's anything better to representing your country. I don't think anything in my life can come close to that.” This shirt pays homage to that feeling of competition, sportsmanship, and greatness, the level of which may never be seen again.
